I think if you want this game to successed, you gotta give them something unexpected, that makes it special from other games!
Perhaps make hand drawn w/pencil animation through a scanner, putting it on a sheet like you would a sprite. But this idea is unique, because it's not going to be like the other Smash Bros Parodies out there on the internet. Here are ways that can happen with Characters, Stages, and Items
For Characters, Stages, and Items: Step 1: Hand Drawn animations (using pencil, and then pen to sharpen the outline) Step 2: Color in those drawn animations with a colored pencils *Tip*: Make frames of it on a clear sheet of paper(or on seprate clear pieces of paper) *if needed for moving animations* Step 4: Scan it, Get a Programmer to program it in the game, and then good to go.
For Backgrounds in stages:
1.) Paint up a background for a stages trust me it would look awsome ( or search for proffesional painters) 2.)Let it dry, then scan it, and it's ready to be in the background of a hand drawn stage!
Now if you don't have a scanner no need to worry I do, and once I develop character animations many more will seek interset in following my steps. Also perhaps make a completely new, and proffesional roster that stays hidden to the final product. But all in all let me work on a character, stage, and item for testing rights. Then soon you'll see many more wanting to not only do the same, but programming the game too. But you gotta let me help, and sort of lead the way so I can lead your game to success in the future, rather than develop something thats already been thought of.

Wow, that sounds like a great idea! But I've already gotten too far using sprites, and changing it up now would be a lot of time spent just to get back at this point. I really like your idea, though. Perhaps we could make those Paper Fighters be the Multi-Man Smash of this game?
